Lone Sailor
ESSAY and ART CONTEST FOR LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS

COUNCIL US NAVY LEAGUE
POWER POINT
DISPLAY
The Bremerton~Olympic Peninsula
council of US Navy League sponsored two contests in conjunction with the
Lone Sailor Memorial project to be installed on the new Bremerton Marina
Breakwater. One contest was an essay and the second contest was a
work of art representing the Lone Sailor Memorial. Both contests
were around the theme of “What does the Lone Sailor Memorial
represent to you?”
Invitations to participate in
both contests were sent to all students enrolled in grades 9 through 12
in a Kitsap County public school, parochial or private school, or who
were home schooled, were eligible to participate.
Both contests were designed to
make the public more aware of this project dedicated to the men and
women who serve our nation, past, present and future. Donations
thus far indicate we will be able to hold our commissioning ceremony
later this summer when we can have the artist and representatives of the
Washington DC Navy Memorial Foundation attend.
Winners of both the essay and art
contests will be presented their awards at the Armed Forces Day gala
event held at the Admiral theater here in Bremerton on 17 May 2008.
As youth coordinator for the
Bremerton Lone Sailor project, Mr. Doug Cook was proud to announce that
Bremerton high school had both the first and second place winners of the
art contest.
Lisa Stith was the councils second
place winner and will be receiving an I Pod at the Armed forces day
event and Amanda Benson will receive a new laptop. Congratulations
and certificate presentations were made on the high school TV during
morning announcements on 3 March 2008. Their teachers, Don Evans
and Steve Priest were also mentioned during the broadcast for
encouraging such fine entries.
Photos of these winners will also be posted on the lonesailor-bremerton.org website shortly.
